The School Of Digestive and Liver Diseases (SDLD), Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGME&R)- Kolkata, is a facility for integrated, multi dimensional and co-ordinated patient- care, education and research in gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Diligence and Precision in delivery of state of art services in relevant care is the primary commitment here while a desire to think beyond discrete borders of science and knowledge form the core driver for research at SDLD. We take care to value and respect every human life but feel fortunate to take care of those who cannot touch the fire and pyre of advanced medicare that is frequently available at premium in this country. We wish and strive to fly high the core principles of public sector health care that still are the only sources of care for millions in this country i.e care with accountability as well as commitment to the people at large.

This "umbrella" structure for fostering action, education and research in gastrointestinal and liver diseases took off in 2006 from a primordial bud - the Department of Gastroenterology, IPGME&R. This department had been in existence since 1986 and was slowly crystallising and collecting the recoil forces that would help it propel SDLD at a later date. This phase of germination was scintillatingly marked by initiation of post doctoral courses in Gastroenterology in 1994. At the same time pioneering research in pathogenesis of Non cirrhotic portal hypertension and arsenicosis associated liver disease was shaping research. What SDLD stands for today is all due to the very strong foundations that were laid down before 2006.
Work at SDLD is an emerald collection of the contributions of each individual member of SDLD team. Here responsibility is individual but pleasure, achievements and joy are always shared. Functionally, we are academically independent but administratively take pride and ownership of a larger IPGME&R family and after all, the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal.
