Another eventful year passes into history and it is my pleasure to welcome you all to the 62nd Foundation Day Ceremony of this great institute for medical education and research in India. This is an annual celebration to recognize our past and reiterate awareness of who we are, what we value and where we should be going. On this auspicious occasion I wish to congratulate the entire faculty, nursing and other staff, residents and undergraduate medical, nursing and paramedical students for their contributions to patient care and all-round development.
Over the last few years, the institute has been undergoing steady upgradation. The departments of Radiotherapy, Neonatology, Microbiology, Urology, Nephrology, Orthopedics, and School of Digestive and Liver Diseases (SDLD) are being upscaled. The construction of the Trauma Centre has been completed till the 11th floor. It should be operational in 2018. Additionally, construction of nine storied OPD complex has started and the pending floors of the new Academic Building are being spruced up. The nearby Ramrikdas Harlalka Hospital on Asutosh Mukherjee Road has been converted to a full-fledged annex of the Bangur Institute of Neuroscience. The greatly expanded Institute of Psychiatry has become declared a Center of Excellence by the Government of India and has celebrated its 200 year service to the mentally ill with great dignity this year. The new 750-seated auditorium, reflecting institution’s status as a premier centre for education and research, has been inaugurated and is the venue for this years celebrations.
On the academic front, there is a rising curve in academic and research activities as is evident from the annual report. The institute has been successfully running undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral courses in medicine and nursing along with different paramedical courses. All the postgraduate and postdoctoral seats which were enhanced from 2010 onwards have now been recognized by Medical Council of India. MCh course in Surgical Gastroenterology has started. There has been further capacity addition in MD seats in General Medicine, Pediatric Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Efforts are ongoing to expand MD seats in Psychiatry and start MD in Community Medicine. From 2016 onwards, the DNB board has been selecting our institute as the Zonal Examination Center.
To students I would like to remind that ‘Service to mankind is service to God’. You must be proud to have got this opportunity to serve humanity. I pray that all of you will mature into honest doctors, ready to serve one and all, specially the poor and the downtrodden, with compassion and competence. You must uphold the prestige of your institution and the nobility of your profession.
I convey my sincere gratitude and thanks to the Dean, MSVP, deputy and assistant superintendents, teachers, students, medical and nursing and group D colleagues, technical and office staff, officials of the civil and electrical PWD department for their wholehearted assistance, cooperation and suggestions. My deep gratitude to my higher officials of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal for their guidance and support.
